On September 6th 2024 I took part in a webinar organised by Boundaryless and hosted by Emanuele Quintarelli on the topic of Leadership in entrepreneurial and ecosystemic organisations”. I was in the wonderful company of Michele Zanini, Paul Lambert and Celine Schillinger, and we have had a very interesting discussions on the impacts of Leadership in modern organisational models.

In the discussion, we chatted about the meaning of Leadership in self-managed and platform organisations. I expressed my view that the word Leadership is so infused with an authority concept, that in these types of organisations we should be looking for an alternative word, maybe stewardship.

In general we commented on the evolving role of Leadership and its impact in organisations.

Here a quick summary of the main points we discussed:

  • 📊 Leadership Evolution: we discussed how leadership must shift in platform organizations, highlighting the transition from hierarchical to decentralized power and autonomy.
  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Diverse Stakeholders & Networks: we emphasized the need to manage a wide range of stakeholders, multiple products, and business models simultaneously, while encouraging co-creation and value generation.
  • 🚀 Decentralized and Adaptive Models: we highlighted the ability of platforms to empower teams and individuals as entrepreneurs, facilitating innovation through decentralized structures and network systems.
  • 💡 Key Leadership Mindsets: Collective leadership requires thinking in systems, focusing on collective goals, and being excellent aggregators of different perspectives and skills, rather than acting as the sole decision-makers.
  • 📚 Historical Leadership Models: we discussed about the evolution of leadership terminology, moving from traditional power-based roles to a more relational, mentoring approach, for which I proposed to also talk in terms of “stewardship”.
